Compounding Services

Aetna Specialty Pharmacy offers specialized care and compounding services. Our compounding pharmacists support you and your patients throughout every step of treatment. Customized medication is prepared to meet each patient's needs.

Our compounding team offers:

  • Vast and continuous training in compounding techniques.
  • Skill to create the most current compounding forms available.
Diligent standards assure high quality compounds and set our compounding labs apart from the competition. We adhere to:
  • USP 797 (sterile) and USP 795 (non-sterile) guidelines.
  • Third party batch testing of products to ensure sterility, potency and pyrogenicity.
  • Facility and air quality management certification.
  • Hazardous materials training and OSHA compliance.
We create compounds to service many treatment categories, including:

Diverse dosage forms cater to individual needs. If a patient requires a form of medication that is not commercially available, we work to adapt the available medication into the necessary format.

We can adjust the flavor of an oral compounded medication specifically to meet the patient's taste preference. An existing oral medication can also be converted into a topical cream. For a nominal fee, topical medication can even be separated out into per unit dosing, allowing for easier administration.

Our clinical assessments result in patient-specific call schedules, which allow us to proactively uncover and resolve any adverse situations.

Reimbursement Assistance

Aetna Specialty Pharmacy's reimbursement specialists coordinate all insurance billing and may be able to minimize out-of-pocket expenses.

We help to reduce administrative time and expense. We work directly with your patients and secondary payers, including Medicare, to complete and file claims in a timely manner.

Ordering is Easy as 1-2-3

Follow these three easy steps to start your patients on service with Aetna Specialty Pharmacy. We'll take care of everything else.
  1. Complete an Aetna Specialty Pharmacy Medication Request Form for each patient Indicates Adobe Reader File Format (1 page).
  2. Indicate delivery arrangements on the form.
  3. Fax your referral to Aetna Specialty Pharmacy at
    1-866-FAX-ASRX (1-866-329-2779).
Complete orders received before 3 p.m. ET are scheduled for next day delivery.

Customized Shipping & Delivery

Every effort is made to package each patient's medication so that it is easy to use.

Orders are carefully filled and packaged, and then express shipped directly to your patient's home, to your office, or to any other location the patient chooses. We ensure that the integrity of the drug is preserved right up until the medication is administered.

In most cases, you may place phone orders for next day delivery, eliminating the need to maintain large inventories.

Quality Packaging of Refrigerated Medications
All refrigerated medications receive special handling:
  • Refrigerated items are separated from all other products. They are packed in plastic bags to protect against condensation.

  • The product is labeled as "refrigerated" and packed in either a 1 ½" thick wall Styrofoam cooler or insulated pouch.

  • The insulated pouch is placed in a UPS™ or FedEx® overnight delivery box. The box is labeled as "refrigerated" and the product is shipped for next day delivery by 10:30 a.m. local time.

  • The insulated Styrofoam cooler contains the product and cooling material with packing and paper added to help prevent the product from moving during shipment. An approved amount of gel ice cooling material (gel ice) is used to maintain ensure that the product temperature at the time of delivery meets the manufacturer's requirements.

  • Labeling and other material included in the packing ensures product usage requirements are documented and available to the recipient.

Note: Aetna Specialty Pharmacy uses an independent lab to validate that the shipping containers achieve the manufacturer's required temperature at the time of delivery. Aetna Specialty Pharmacy can provide these results upon request.
